Technology

Modern Mennonites are very open to new technology and contact with the world around them. The Amish and Old Order Mennonites tend to shun some forms of technology. They do not have electricity in their homes (Amish and some Old Order Mennonites), use the horse and carriage for transportation, etc. However, some groups of Amish do permit use of technology for work or business purposes, or as long as it is not brought into the home. Community telephones used by Amish neighbors have been common in the past. Today, one can see Amish and some Old Order Mennonites in a horse and buggy using a cell phone. Theologically, this allows these “plain” people to keep technology under their control and not be controlled by the outside world.
