Voting

Voting practices among Mennonites vary greatly. The more conservative groups in the Mennonite family usually do not vote. Many persons in the more modern groups do vote. It depends somewhat on individual preferences. However, we do feel the need for the church to help make decisions about “being in the world without belonging to the world.”

We ask serious questions such as, “Will this participation in the government or in other institutions of society enable us to be ambassadors of Christ’s reconciliation?” or “Will participation violate our commitment to the way of Christ and compromise our loyalty to Christ?” If we answer “yes” to these questions, then it is better not to vote.
