Christmas

Mennonites celebrate Christmas.  We recognize this as the time when Jesus was born and this is the basis for our celebration.  Different groups of Mennonites may celebrate differently.  The more modern groups use the same decorations and gifts as others.  There often is an emphasis about giving gifts to the needy as well. The more traditional/conservative groups do not have Christmas trees or use decorations around the house.  They may attend a church service on Christmas day.  Gifts for the family are usually quite simple. For all groups, it is an important family day when large family gatherings are held. African American, Hispanic, and Asian Mennonites might celebrate different Christmas traditions from their cultural background.
