Donating organs/bodies
The Mennonite Church does not have an official position regarding either the donation of organs or the donation of bodies for scientific research. Individuals vary in their position on the subject. The emphasis on serving one another and on mutual aid may lead persons to sign organ donation cards, and many Mennonites feel strongly that we should offer ourselves in this way. There is certainly no objection to the medical procedures as such; an individual’s objection to the donation process is generally personal and not religious in nature.
In regard to receiving organ transplants, there is some ambivalence regarding the extensive costs and limited availability of organs. Because of this, some persons decline to be placed on recipient lists.
