Statement on torture

The Mennonite Church has no specific statement on torture. Mennonite Church USA’s Iraq statement, from 2005, doesn’t mention it per se, though it speaks clearly against war, of which torture is a part. Similarly, there isn’t a specific statement against rape, another common instrument of guerilla warfare, or against bombing, etc. because Mennonites are just simply against war and all that goes with it.

More recently, Mennonite Central Committee’s Washington Office and Mennonite Church USA’s Peace and Justice Support Network have been working closely with Christian Peace Witness for Iraq, and “NO! to torture” is one of the primary pillars.

And in 2007, Jim Schrag,  then Executive Director of Mennonite Church USA, signed the National Religious Campaign Against Torture.
